The story behind Built By Her

Built from the lessons no one teaches you.

Built By Her did not begin with a polished framework or a perfect business plan. It began when Samantha’s family lost the income they depended on—and a garage-door side business had to become a real, sustainable company.

Before there was a method

There was a family trying to find a way forward.

When Samantha and Clayton met, Clayton already had JR Garage Door & Services. He was excellent at the trade: repairing doors, replacing them, and caring for customers. But the company was still a side business powered by pen, paper, a price book, and years of hands-on experience.

Samantha worked full-time in the mortgage industry, and her career provided the stability their household relied on. When the mortgage market collapsed, that stability disappeared. The family could no longer treat JR Garage Door as extra income. It had to become a business capable of supporting them.

“Put your time into JR Garage Door & Services, and let’s figure out how to replace your lost income with income from this business.”

The conversation that changed everything

The mistakes became the curriculum

The business was good at the work. It was not yet built to run.

01

No one owned payment.

Samantha thought Clayton was collecting from customers. Clayton thought Samantha was collecting through the new payment system. Work was completed, but some payments were never collected.

02

The price was not the profit.

Three garage doors were quoted at cost instead of the selling price. The jobs created work, but almost no profit—and exposed how much of the business Samantha still needed to learn.

03

Doing the work was not enough.

There was no business banking, no defined process, no contracts, and no clear ownership of responsibilities. Technical skill could not replace business infrastructure.

Building the business behind the trade

She learned it, then built a process around it.

Samantha began researching what a legitimate home-improvement business needed. She worked through licensing and compliance, opened business banking, set up professional invoicing and credit-card processing, and learned how pricing, collections, and customer communication had to work together.

The systems were not sophisticated at first. They were built one problem at a time—through research, questions, mistakes, and the determination not to keep operating the same way.

Even after returning to a full-time career as a data analyst, Samantha continued building JR Garage Door before work, after work, during lunch breaks, and on weekends. Her paycheck supported the family. The business became her classroom.

Every mistake became a lesson.
Every lesson became a process.
Every process became a system.
Every system made the business stronger.

The proof was in what happened next

The second layoff felt different.

When the private company Samantha worked for later closed its doors, she was laid off again. This time, she did not panic. The business was not perfect, but it was no longer being held together by hope. A year of building systems had changed the company—and changed her confidence in what they could handle.

Why Built By Her exists

To help owners build the business behind the work.

Built By Her turns hard-earned experience into practical training, tools, and systems for service-business owners who are good at their trade but need a stronger way to run the company around it.

Recurring problems reveal missing systems.

The goal is not blame. It is finding the process that makes the next outcome more predictable.

Clear ownership prevents confusion.

When responsibility is visible, people can communicate clearly and important work is less likely to disappear.

Build before you try to grow.

Growth becomes healthier when the foundation can support more customers, more work, and more people.

You can be excellent at the work and still need help building the business.

That is not failure. It is the place where a stronger system can begin.
